What Happened in the Rue Morgue?

“The Murders in the Rue Morgue” is a short story set in Paris sometime between 1800 and 1841. In the story, a woman and her daughter are brutally murdered. The fourth-floor room in the fictional Rue Morgue where the murders occurred is locked from the inside. The police are stumped.

C. Auguste Dupin, a brilliant young man of noble birth but diminished financial means, reads detailed newspaper accounts of the crime, and puts his mental faculties to the test, using his power of reason (his armchair detective skills) to do what the police cannot — solve the mystery.
