Play your cards right, and you’ll have a 22-hour layover in Panama City en route to Lima. I call it the Panama City layover plan.
See, it can take anywhere from 10-30 hours to get to Lima from Denver.
The place to stay is the Tantalo Hotel in Casco Viejo, the old, shabby chic part of town. The rundown majesty of Casco Viejo is something to behold. The room we stayed in is the size of my loft. I wish I were kidding.
What to do in 22 hours? Check out the city from the hotel’s rooftop, drink free mojitos, walk about at night (it’s safe – the president lives a couple blocks away, and armed guards are on many corners). Drink the best coffee of your life, then explore the beautiful ruins on foot the next day. Climb Ancon Hill and take in the sweeping views. Seriously, climb it. It takes an hour or so. Driving is stupid.
